Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the caring experience and self-care process of older women caring for a spouse based on in-depth interview data. The study also focuses on finding how caregivers practice their self-care and the barriers that prevent caregivers from achieving self-care.
Methods: We employed eleven older wives caring for their spouses and collected their stories of care experience and life history, applying the grounded theory method to analyze the in-depth data.
Results: The results revealed that the central phenomenon of the caring experience was ¡®broken life¡¯ and the initial causal condition was ¡®the beginning of care¡¯. Pursuit of self-care emerged as wives attempted to control the care situation alone and to overcome their care burden. However, the core categories of ¡°restraint like fate¡±, ¡°support for endless sacrifice¡±, and ¡°take care of me¡± reflect that wives¡¯ current self-care practices seem to be insufficient to demonstrate their active agency and mastery.
Conclusions: Based on our findings, we discuss the professional counseling plans and policy intervention strategies.
